Hong Kong is clearly going through a challenging time at the moment.
With cases rising, a COVID strategy that is questionable, the media portraying sentiments of fear, businesses being forced to close. It is no surprise that our mental and physical fortitude is being put to the test.
However, what we can do, is to do our best with whatever is within our control.
Here are are 8 wellness tips worth implementing in your life that can make the current situation we are all in slightly better and a bit more worthwhile.
1.
Nutrition and Supplementation
Proper nutrition affects you both physiologically and psychologically. Make sure you have a nutrient-dense diet. That means eating a healthy balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats filled with micronutrients.
Sometimes eating meals that may not be publicly defined as “healthy” but that you enjoy is also important psychologically to keep you relaxed and in a cheerful mood. So balance is key.
Supplements are also shown to help aid and strengthen the body’s immune system. Vitamin B, C, D, and zinc are shown to help combat COVID-19.
2.
Hydration
Hydration during these times is very important. Up to 60% of the human adult body is water. We suggest drinking 2.5-3 litres of water per day (this can vary depending on your height, weight, age, gender, lifestyle etc.).
We also suggest drinking warm water to soothe the throat, removing harmful bacteria and germs in the mouth, lungs and stomach.
Pro Tip: Enjoy natural, herbal teas. For example, mix honey, lemon, ginger, tumeric and add a dash of cayenne pepper all mixed with hot water for a healthy, soothing, recovery drink.
3.
Exercise. Stretch. Move!
Have a movement-based routine daily. Move your body for at least 30-60 minutes per day. Do not be stuck sitting on the couch for hours staring at a screen.
If you have work tasks to complete via the computer, vary the ways in which you sit. Get off chairs, sit on the floor in different positions to mobilize your hips.
We are not in total lockdown. While being safe, step outside for a little while. Get some natural vitamin d from the sun and fresh air. This does not have to belong, simply walk around your neighborhood for a moment.
There should be no excuses for this point with the abundance of content available via YouTube or even our IKIGAI channels!
4.
Listen To Music
Music is the language of the soul and is a huge mood booster. Pick a genre that works for you. Pair it with a boogie around the house if you like!
Sound and music can easily alter your mood and affect your subconscious mind. Everything you listen to becomes a part of yourself. Therefore it is very important to surround yourself with sounds that make you happy.
5.
Enrich Your Environment by Cleaning and Creating Space
Of course hygiene matters, so keeping a clean home is important. But creating more physical space, keeping things tidy and decluttering can be extremely therapeutic.
Living a more a minimalist lifestyle means that you have less to lose. You will experience less stress because you have less to worry about.
6.
Communicate Consciously
Don’t bottle up negative emotions you feel over time. If this adds up, it can lead to an explosion.
Learn how and when to communicate consciously with people you trust and are willing to listen. This can be done with a partner, spouse, friend, relative etc.
The important thing to keep in mind here is the environment. These conversations should be had in a safe, quiet, space and time where there are no external distractions or disturbances.
Looking for help is nothing to be ashamed of it’s very common. We all feel and experience it in different ways.
7.
Practice Breathwork / Mindfulness / Meditation
Proper breathing acts as the medium for individuals to take their health into their own hands. It improves physical health and fitness performance, manages pain, alleviate and prevents diseases and influences immunity.
If you are new to mindfulness or meditation, this is the perfect opportunity to start. If you are a seasoned veteran of the practice, now is the time to go deeper and ask yourself whether your practice is actually working.
How do you process your thoughts, feelings and emotions? Picture this. There is currently a storm brewing all around you. Yet you remain undisturbed and cultivate the capability to do whatever you need to that’s within your control to give you the best possible outcome during this pandemic. Meditation can offer this.
An uncollected, scattered mind is the opposite of a meditative mind. Training the ability to focus your attention in one direction for an extended period of time, not only strengthens your willpower, it is also one of the methods used to quieten the mind. A quiet mind then has the potential to become a peaceful and clear mind.
8.
Learn A New Skill / Get Creative
Step out of your comfort zone and pick up a new trade. Or tap in to older, neglected past skills.
We suggest doing something creative. Complete a puzzle, paint or draw, play music etc. This stimulates the right hemisphere of the brain also related to controlling attention, memory, reasoning, and problem solving.
Now is the time to quieten the analytical left hemisphere of the brain and restructure your neural circuitry, leaving you refreshed and recharged with new energy.
